tumbled crema marfil floor etched

Q. Hi, I have a tumbled crema marfil kitchen floor. It is 5 years old. It appears to hold the dirt in cracks that appear to have increased over time. When I have the floor steamed cleaned it looks really great but months later it becomes so dirty again! I have it sealed each time but to no avail. Also the steam cleaner told me to use vinegar mixed with hot water to clean, I guess I have been ruining the floor, how can I fix this?

A. Vinegar is the worst thing you can use to clean a marble floor. The vinegar you are using to clean with is acidic and is most likely causing the stone to develop these cracks and has dulled (etched) the finish of your floor. There are a few things that can be done, such as filling the cracks with an epoxy fill, but I would not recommend trying this yourself. In the meantime, stop using vinegar and switch to a good marble (neutral) cleaner safe for marble. You should have a professional come and evaluate the severity of the damage.  To find a professional stone restoration contractor in your area, contact us
