How can I remove some spill spots on kitchen marble floor?

Q. I see some spots on my newly installed kitchen marble floor. I think something was spilled but I am not sure what. What is the best steps I can take to remove these spots?

A. If these spots are dull etch marks from someone spilling something acidic on the tiles, then you can try to repolish the spots with etch remover.

If they are stains then you will need to apply a poultice to remove the stain.

How can you tell the difference between a stain and an etch? When marble etches it will appear lighter than the stone and may feel somewhat rough (depending on the severity). When it is a true stain, it will be darker. In some cases, you may find that it is both -- for instance if you spill wine or soft drinks. If it is both, you will have to treat the etch and the stain separately.
