Someone recently commented on SurpHaces social media, asserting that Grout Color Sealer cannot be considered a permanent solution. Here is their comment and our response.
Comment: Grout Color Sealer is Topical. Will peel or uplift sooner than later. This is the last resort method were "permanently" discolored grout is present, decorative areas, or hard to reach areas where professional tile and grout cleaning equipment cannot reach (hi-rise buildings). f the color sealer is to be used, the surface must be first alkaline washed then acid washed to "open the pores" of the grout to let adhere. Color sealer could be a "temporary solution to a permanent problem..."
Response: We asked Steve Aleric of ColorSealPro for some input. Here is what he said: "Grout color sealing is suitable for both permanently stained grout and new installations. High quality, properly installed grout color sealer can be considered a permanent solution, compared to clear sealer or no sealer. Grout is porous, so no grout sealer at all is a poor choice for obvious reasons. Both clear sealed and color sealed tile and grout floors will require maintenance. Color sealed grout exceeds the performance of clear sealer by far, because with professional cleaning the grout will look brand new again. This is not true of clear sealer. Any problems associated with grout color sealing are a result of service providers trying to restore or clean color seal installations without identifying that the floor has been color sealed or areas that are improperly maintained, improper color seal installation, or poor quality product."
