Unfortunately there is no formula for how long each grit should be worked except that granite requires much longer to hone then marble. Generally one minute per square foot is a good starting point. However, some granites may take longer. It is not unusual to spend as much as three minutes per grit per square foot. The time required should be calculated with a test sample.
TIP A gloss meter can be an invaluable tool in determining when it is time to proceed to the next grit. Frequently stop and take a gloss reading. It is time to move to the next grit when the gloss readings no longer improve.
