We are remodeling our kitchen and want to put in new counter tops. Which is better, marble or granite?

Both granite and marble make excellent counter tops, depending on the counter’s intended use. Marble is sensitive to acids, which can make it difficult to keep polished in a kitchen. Granite, by contrast, is acid-resistant, and can make an excellent counter in a well-used kitchen; on the other hand, it can be very porous, and will thus stain with oils. Be sure to seal it with a good quality silicone sealer.

TIP Green marbles are an exception to the rule. While they will etch with acids they can be very durable countertops. Limestone can also make an excellent counter.
