Cigarette burns will leave a yellow nicotine stain, which can be difficult to remove. The heat from the cigarette can also melt the stone. The melting damage can only be repaired by honing the marble. The yellow nicotine stain can be removed by preparing a powder poultice with 50% hydrogen peroxide.
TIP 50% hydrogen peroxide can be purchased from a beauty supply store. Hair bleach is hydrogen peroxide. Do not use hydrogen peroxide that you buy in a drug store, this is only a 3% solution and will not remove the stain.
