A Better Coating for Slate Floors Than High-Speed Acrylic Wax

Recommended Coating for Slate Floors

Coatings on slate floors can enhance the appearance of the slate, inhibit staining on the surface of the stone, and lighten the load a little when it comes to maintenance. However, the wrong type of coating on slate can cause problems.

Fred Hueston, Chief Technical Director of Surface Care Pros and Owner of Stone Forensics explains, “The disadvantage of high-speed acrylic wax on slate is that it will scuff and mar continuously. Try a coating that has a higher solids percentage. This may help reduce the scuffing. There are several products on the market made for slate and similar stone. Check with your stone care product supplier.”

Make sure when you properly prepare the floor before applying any new coating. The slate should not have any efflorescence problems, and it should be thoroughly cleaned so that any dirt, oils, or previous coatings do not interfere with the new application.
