Fancy Edge

Dealing with Fancy Edges During Countertop Restoration

By Fred Hueston

Restoring countertops with fancy or decorative edges can be a challenge for even the most experienced stone restoration professional. While flat surfaces are straightforward to hone and polish with standard diamond pads, fancy edges require special attention to detail and a few tricks of the trade.

Understanding the Challenge

When a countertop has a decorative edge such as an ogee, bullnose, or waterfall profile, it is important to address the entire surface, including the curved or intricate parts of the edge. Neglecting these areas can leave a countertop looking incomplete or uneven.

Offsetting Your Diamond Pad

One technique I often use is offsetting the diamond pad on my drive pad so that it slightly overhangs the edge. This allows the diamond pad to conform to the contour of the edge and reach the entire profile without digging into the stone or missing spots. By carefully adjusting the pad, you can smooth and polish the curved areas more effectively.

Use Flexible Diamond Pads

Flexible diamond pads are a must when working on fancy edges. Their flexibility allows them to follow the curves and contours of the edge profile without leaving flat spots or gouges. These pads can bend slightly as they move over the surface, ensuring an even, consistent finish. Make sure you use pads specifically designed for flexibility and variable shapes.

Profile Bits for Polishers

In addition to offsetting and flexible pads, there are profile bits that can be attached to a polisher. These bits are designed to match specific edge profiles like ogee or demi-bullnose. They allow you to recreate or touch up the original profile while polishing it to a consistent shine. Using the right bit can save time and produce a uniform, professional look that matches the flat areas of the countertop.

Profile Hand Pads

Another useful tool is the shaped hand pad. These pads are designed to fit specific edge profiles, giving you control and precision in tight spots where machines may not reach. Hand pads are ideal for detailed work, touch-ups, or when working on small sections that require extra care. Having a variety of shaped hand pads in your toolkit ensures you can handle even the most intricate edges.
