Customer Concern: “Can My Granite Countertop Poison Me?”
By Fred Hueston
What You Need to Tell Your Clients: If you’ve been in the stone industry long enough, you’ve probably had at least one customer nervously ask: “Is my granite countertop poisoning me?” It’s a question fueled by years of media reports, internet rumors, and general misunderstanding. As a stone professional, it’s important to be ready with clear, reassuring facts. Here’s what you need to know — and what you can tell your customers.
The Truth About Radon and Granite
The primary worry people bring up is radon gas. Since granite is a natural material, some believe it might emit dangerous levels of radon into their homes. While it’s true that all natural stones can contain trace amounts of radioactive elements, the reality is that granite countertops emit radon at extremely low, often undetectable levels.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has thoroughly researched this concern and concluded that radon emissions from granite countertops are insignificant. In fact, the radon exposure from granite is usually less than the background levels already present in the outdoor air.
Key point for customers: Their granite countertop is not a radon hazard and poses no health threat.
What About Bacteria?
Another common myth is that granite countertops are unsafe because they supposedly “harbor bacteria.” The truth is, granite is actually one of the more hygienic surfaces available, especially when properly sealed.
Granite is a dense, relatively non-porous stone. Once sealed, it doesn’t provide the kind of environment bacteria needs to grow and multiply. A simple cleaning with mild soap and water or a gentle disinfectant is more than enough to keep granite surfaces safe and clean.
Compared to surfaces like wood, laminate, or even some synthetics, granite is one of the easiest to maintain hygienically.
Reassure Your Customers: Granite Is Safe
The bottom line you should confidently share:
- Granite countertops do not pose a radon risk.
- Properly sealed granite is a safe, hygienic surface.
- Numerous independent studies confirm that granite is completely safe for residential and commercial use.
Granite isn’t just beautiful and durable—it’s also a safe, smart investment for any kitchen or bath. If a customer expresses concern, take the time to explain the science in simple terms. Your expertise will not only put their mind at ease but also reinforce the trust they have in choosing a knowledgeable stone professional.
