A Case That Looked Like a Map
Some jobs walk in loud. Others sneak up on you. This one showed up shaped like a map.
The call came in late afternoon, the time of day when coffee stops working and bad ideas start sounding reasonable. The owner said his terrazzo floor had cracked. Not unusual. Then he added one detail.
“It looks like Florida.”
I laughed. Then I stopped laughing. Experience has taught me that when someone says something that strange, it’s usually true.
Following the Clues
I took the Woody out, windows down, salt in the air even though I was nowhere near the coast. I swung by Flo’s first. Habit. She poured the usual without asking.
“Floor cracked,” I told her. “Looks like the whole state.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Panhandle included?”
“Wouldn’t surprise me.”
The Scene of the Crime
The building was quiet, the kind of quiet terrazzo hates. The owner met me inside and pointed down. There it was. A crack running clean and proud across the floor, curving just enough to make your stomach tighten. If you squinted, you could see it. Peninsula. Panhandle. Even a little kick where Miami would be if terrazzo cared about geography.
The owner crossed himself.

I knelt down and ran my fingers along the crack. It wasn’t fresh panic. It had history. Stress written in cement and marble chips. Floors don’t speak in symbols. They speak in physics.
I pulled out my notebook. No expansion joints where they should’ve been. Long uninterrupted runs of terrazzo like someone dared it to move. The slab underneath had shifted, just enough to matter. Differential movement, the slow kind that doesn’t announce itself until it’s already done the damage.
Terrazzo is tough, but it’s honest. It doesn’t bend much. It waits. When it finally moves, it leaves a signature.
The crack followed the weakest path, right where restraint was highest and relief was nowhere to be found. It just happened to look like Florida. Long, narrow, under constant pressure, and always one bad storm away from trouble.
Explaining the Truth
The owner watched me work, still hoping for a miracle.
“So it’s not… you know,” he said, waving his hand in the shape of the state.
“No,” I said. “It’s math. Bad detailing and time doing what it always does.”

I filed it away as “The Case of the Cracked Peninsula.” A favorite among inspectors. Proof that terrazzo doesn’t need imagination to tell a story.
