Q. Is granite sensitive to acids?

A. Unlike marble, granite is not a calcite based stone and is not generally vulnerable to acids. However, some stones, even though they are marketed as granite, may in fact have calcium in their makeup. Furthermore, there is one acid that will severely etch, pit and dull a polished granite surface. This acid is known as Hydrofluoric acid(HF) and is found in many rust removers. To avoid etching on granite surfaces you may want to check the label and see if it contains Hydrofluoric acid. If damaged, the granite may need to be repaired.
